History of the Bridegrooms Cake

It seems that the first appearance of the bridegroom’s cake is hard to pin down. However, it is traceable back as far as the nineteenth century where it was made as a small sweetened with honey cake that included all manners of fruit and nuts, thereby making it literally a fruitcake of sorts. These bridegroom cakes were both packaged as small individual cakes and given to all the single women attending the wedding and they would then take them home and place them under their pillows while sleeping in hopes of dreaming of their own true love. Alternatively, the bridegroom’s cake was one large dark cake that was created to not upstage the wedding cake, which is considered the bride’s cake. These larger bridegroom cakes were then sliced and passed around to those in attendance along with a glass of wine for toasting the wedding. Although there has been a loss of interest in grooms cake in other areas, the cake is still pretty popular in many American weddings, especially in southern weddings and seem to be coming more popular as the years come and go.

A bridegroom’s cake can be chosen by both the bride and the groom or the groom can pick out his own groom’s cake as well the bride might choose to make the cake a surprise to her groom by picking it out herself for their rehearsal dinner or even their wedding reception. Normally the groom’s cake of this day and time is chosen as representing of the groom himself and his interests. The groom’s cake is usually made of chocolate or even a fruitcake, depending on the choices of the bride and groom. The cake may be created to look like just about anything that holds the grooms interest, whether that be serious or comical and have been shaped from anything from footballs, basketballs, books or any other symbol of his hobbies, profession, favorite sports and activities as well as his alma mater. Although many groom’s cakes are made of fruit or chocolate the matter of flavor should be one that is a favorite of the groom such as a German Chocolate, Strawberry or Lemon even, it actually is a personal choice to the flavor and decorative touches which are symbolic of the bridegroom.

Since the Groom’s Cake is not suppose to upstage the Bride’s cake in any way it is normally placed on a separate table and usually cut by the attendants of the grooms cake table. Although there have been wedding cakes made that incorporate both the bride’s and the groom’s cakes to represent the symbolic blending of the couple in marriage. These wedding cakes are displayed with the groom’s cake as a bottom layer and the top layer is the bride’s cake. Therefore, when choosing a groom’s cake you can pretty much choose a cake that best represents the groom and his interests as well as his marriage to his bride. While shopping for a groom’s cake remember to talk with your baker and find out what types of groom’s cake they offer as well as finding out about making custom groom’s cakes.
